A Workshop on Scientific Writing by Springer Verlag is planned during ISW 2009 to provide new authors and new reviewers insight in how to prepare and review scientific manuscripts.

Separate Registration will be required for participation in the Workshop.

AUD 75.00 (this fee will be refunded to all participants who attend at least two of the three one hour sessions)
The Workshops will cover three mornings, for one hour each morning, from 07:30 to 08:30.  Each morning a faculty member (editorial board member of the World Journal of Surgery) will meet with his/her group of 4-6 students to discuss the topic at hand. Enrollment will be limited to 90 participants (fifteen groups maximum).

The expectation is that attendees will bring a copy of a manuscript that they will share with the group for peer review. There will be other readings electronically transmitted to all course participants in advance.

  
Day one
Tuesday, September 8, 2009: Discuss manuscript structure, content, and language, using a rejected manuscript as a case study.  

Day two
Wednesday, September 9, 2009: Discuss the format and content of a high quality manuscript review.  Distribute accepted manuscripts within the groups.

Homework
Each group member will write a review of the accepted manuscript from another member of his/her group.

Day three
Thursday, September 10, 2009: Review the reviews.  Discuss ethical conduct in scientific writing, authorship, trial registration and reporting.

A certificate will be issued.

Students
Students will be registered on a "first come, first served" basis and will be grouped - if possible - by specialty interest.  This will help when it comes to reviewing each other's papers.
